Ever since Jurassic Park (1994) premiered in movie theaters around the world, dinosaurs cemented their position in the public imagination. As such, dinosaur bones and fossils are among the most popular items in natural history museums. Made for display, this 577-piece set is a perfect gift for both fans of the Jurassic World franchise and paleontology at large. The set features a skull with an opening jaw, a stand with a golden information plaque, a hidden “amber” piece at the back of the model and a “fossilized” footprint.

When completed, the skull model is 8 inches tall, making it perfect for discreet decor in muted tones. But since it was created with future paleontologists in mind, the set is posable and hopes to spark young imaginations with each of its parts. “LEGO Jurassic World building sets are made to encourage a kid’s love of dinosaur toys, helping them expand their creativity and develop their storytelling skills,” LEGO states.

Mariah Carey has become almost synonymous with Christmas ever since her hit “All I Want for Christmas is You” hit the airwaves. Now, Mattel has decided to ring in the holiday season by turning this pop icon into her own glamorous Barbie. The Mariah Carey Barbie Doll was crafted faithfully to capture her likeness, making her ready to fill any fan and collector's home with holiday cheer.

While Carey has rocked many festive outfits throughout the years, the designers have chosen one of her most iconic ensembles for her doll version. The Mariah Carey Barbie Doll dons a sparkly red gown, similar to the one she wore for the second music video, released in 2019 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the beloved holiday song. Her look includes her long wavy hair, famous butterfly ring, long silver earrings, and a matching microphone.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime dream to have my own Barbie! If I could go back and tell my little girl self that one day, I would have a Barbie made in my likeness, I think she would flip out,” Carey gushed in a statement released by Mattel. “I hope all collectors and fans everywhere enjoy the holiday season and hopefully the Mariah Barbie will be a wonderful addition to it.”

Whether as part of your holiday decor or as a loving gift for a Barbie lover, this doll is one for the ages—just like Mariah herself. After 2023's wildly successfully Barbie movie, it's more obvious than ever that Barbie is more than just a plastic doll. She embodies the dreams of young girls and has for decades been a vehicle for imagining a bright future. Barbie—owned by the Mattel brand—has become increasingly representative in recent years, aiming to diversify its dolls' skin tones, hair textures, and body types. The brand is also adding more diverse storylines to its collection, including the Inspiring Women series with the likes of Rosa Parks, Jane Goodall, and Bessie Coleman. The newest addition recognizes Wilma Mankiller, the first female Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, by recreating the iconic leader as a Barbie.

Mankiller—who has also recently been immortalized on a U.S. quarter—was born in 1945 in Oklahoma. A member of the Cherokee Nation, she moved as a child to California as part of a government program that was aimed at urbanizing Indigenous populations with devastating results for reservation land and communities. Her activism for women and the Indigenous community began during her early career as a social worker in California before Mankiller eventually returned home to the Cherokee Nation.

In her community, Mankiller was a tireless advocate. She founded the Community Development Department to improve housing and water access (which to this day is a struggle for many on reservations). In 1985, she was elected Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, the first woman to serve in the position. She led the sovereign nation boldly, contributing to declines in infant mortality rates and promoting educational achievement, among many other accomplishments. She left office in 1995, but continued her activism until her death in 2010. She was inducted into the Women's Hall of Fame in 1993 and bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998.

Mattel's rendition of Mankiller is based on a photograph her husband took of her in 2005, outfit and all. She wears a ribbon dress with four colors representing the four compass directions. Her estate and representatives of the Cherokee Nation contributed their thoughts in the design process. Her husband, Charlie Sopa, said, “I am deeply honored Mattel is recognizing Wilma with the Wilma Mankiller doll. Wilma inspired me and many others to make the world a better place. As her community development partner for over 30 years, we shared a passion for empowering Indian communities and educating future generations.”

“When Native girls see it, they can achieve it, and Wilma Mankiller has shown countless young women to be fearless and speak up for Indigenous and Human rights,” said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. “She not only served in a role dominated by men during a time that tribal nations were suppressed, but she led. Wilma Mankiller is a champion for the Cherokee Nation, for Indian Country and even my own daughter.”

One of the most exciting parts of the holiday season is opening presents on Christmas morning. For this holiday season, LEGO has put together six limited-edition advent calendars. Among the 2023 models is a Star Wars set, an Avengers advent calendar, and a Harry Potter set that could easily double as a Christmas village. The featured franchises are given a Christmas twist, with beloved characters donning holiday outfits and their iconic sets being transformed with holiday decorations. Additionally, there's a LEGO City Advent Calendar starring Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus themselves.

The Star Wars set sees characters from all of the movies and TV shows coming together for a cheerful celebration—Emperor Palpatine holds a warm drink as he chats with Princess Leia. Meanwhile, a clone trooper and battle droid have a snow fight as an Ewok gets ready to take to the skies.

In the Avengers advent calendar, the super heroes are back at Stark Tower for a Christmas party. Spider-Man happily dons a holiday sweater, maybe hoping that his friends will join him by the fireplace. On top of some beloved characters like Doctor Strange and Captain America, the mini builds feature iconic elements such as the Quinjet and the Hydra Train.

Meanwhile, the Harry Potter set takes fans right back to the charming town of Hogsmeade. There, a bundled up Harry is joined by Hermione and Ron for some holiday treats from The Three Broomsticks Inn and the Honeydukes candy store. MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging is a valuable and versatile medical resource. By using strong magnetic fields and radio waves, an MRI can produce detailed images of the inside of a body. However, it can be a daunting procedure for some, especially children. Not only do patients have to lay flat inside the tunnel of the scanner for a while, but the machine is also known for emitting loud tapping noises. In an effort to make it easier for kids undergoing an MRI scan, LEGO created toy sets of an MRI scanner to help alleviate their fears.

Created with children in mind, the LEGO MRI scanner can be used by radiologists to walk children through the process before the actual procedure. By providing a safe “practicing space” through something familiar like a LEGO set, stress and anxiety can be greatly reduced.

The LEGO MRI scanners began as passion project for LEGO employee Erik Ullerlund Staehr and Odense University Hospital, Denmark in 2015. Since their first prototype, the staff reports that over 200 children aged 4 to 9 have had their concerns addressed and relieved every year. Almost simultaneously, medical staff in the U.S. and Belgium came up with their own LEGO MRI scanners. Now, they've all joined forces with the LEGO Foundation to develop this model and help it reach more places.

“MRI Scanners are huge machines,” says Ulla Jensen from the Department of Radiology at Odense University Hospital Denmark, which collaborated with the LEGO Group when creating this set. “They also make a lot of noise which can be very daunting for children. Our team have found that use of models such as the LEGO model has led to more positive, calm experiences for many children. This benefits the child, their family, and also the quality of the MRI scan, which relies on the person being very still for up to an hour to work.”

Hoping to help as many children as possible, LEGO donated 600 LEGO MRI scanners to hospitals around the world. These models were then built by volunteers and shipped for free. Since the response to this project was overwhelmingly positive, LEGO will now work closely with those hospitals that were assigned a LEGO MRI scanner to integrate their feedback and ideas to any future designs.

As part of their ever-growing Super Mario collection, LEGO has announced a Piranha Plant set for fans to recreate the omnipresent enemy from the game.

The 540-piece LEGO Piranha Plant set relies on the geometric nature of LEGO blocks to give the flower its pixelated look. Since the iconic green pipes have come to double as a pot for these deadly characters, the LEGO version of the Piranha Plant is displayed in a buildable pipe, which you start working on from the bottom up. When finished, it measures 9 inches (23 cm) high, 4.5 inches (11 cm) wide and 6.5 inches (17 cm) deep, so feel free to turn it into a centerpiece or trade it for your old flower vase for a fun touch. It was designed to be displayed.

The best part of the LEGO Piranha Plant is that it is fully posable. Its clever design allows fans to move the head, mouth, stalk and leaves to create fun poses. “When designing the Piranha Plant, it felt important to capture its distinctive features and ensure that the set could be positioned in a way that reflects its iconic poses,” says senior designer Carl Merriam. “I’m so proud of the finished result, from the mouth to the leaves and stalk, we’ve managed to perfectly portray the menacing essence of the Piranha Plant!”

As if that wasn't enough, you get a really nice reward for your work, as the set also includes two coin elements. The Concorde, known for its legacy as an incredibly fast airliner, was only in service for 27 years. Even so, it had a lasting impact on the history of aviation—crossing the Atlantic in a stunning three-and-a-half hours. A speed that contemporary travelers long for these days. While the Concorde retired in 2003, it is not forgotten. LEGO decided to pay tribute to this marvelous plane with a special 2,083-piece Concorde LEGO set.

As part of the LEGO Icons series, the Concorde set is highly detailed. Many of its features replicate the inner workings of the famed supersonic plane. At nearly three-and-a-half feet in length with a wingspan of one-and-a-half feet, the LEGO Concorde is one of the toy manufacturer's largest models in their catalog. The sharpness of its design makes it the perfect addition to the shelf of any plane-spotter, too.

Among the elements that pay tribute to the original Concorde are its tiltable droop nose and visor, which allowed pilots to see the runway during landing, and its additional tail landing gear that accommodated the high angles during takeoff and landing. Since passengers traveling on the Concorde were seated in 40 forward and 60 rear cabin seats, LEGO has recreated its seating area, even going so far as to add the lavatories.

One of the most fascinating features of this model is the landing gear mechanism, which can be raised or lowered with a twist of the tail cone. Since the movie recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, Mattel Creations decided to mark the occasion by spotlighting some of the most iconic elements of this Steven Spielberg-directed film in a highly detailed playset.

The Jurassic World The Gates set features a motorized entrance that welcomes visitors to the thrilling theme park. Mattel expertly captured every detail from the iconic movie and brought it to life in toy form—from the torches on the sides to the manual override on the maintenance panel.

The set also includes the colorful Ford Explorer #5, with red stripes, the park logo, and a sunroof on the exterior, and even a perfect copy of the interior, including the painted radio. As this sci-fi story wouldn't move forward without its human characters, the set features figurines of Lex Murphy and her younger brother, Tim, as well as that poor goat the staff intended to feed to the dinosaurs.

Ultimately, there would be no Jurassic Park without its bone-chilling T. Rex, which takes center stage on this set. As scary-looking as it is in the film, the model T. Rex bears a remarkable likeness and is not only posable but also highly realistic with intricately textured skin.

Sadly, the Jurassic World The Gates crowdfunding campaign closed on July 26, and it failed to meet the 5,000-backers threshold it needed to be produced. Still, this playset is something that any Jurassic Park fan would have loved to commemorate the first time they saw this exciting blockbuster.

LEGOs are a staple of childhood learning and creativity. Whether one chooses to follow the instructions or set out into the building unknown, these blocks are as stimulating to the brain as they are painful to the unsuspecting foot. LEGO Braille Blocks—sets that the LEGO Foundation began distributing to schools for the blind several years ago—are now succeeded by the first model of braille bricks available for public purchase. This $89.99 set can be pre-ordered now and starts shipping on September 1, 2023.

The set comes with 287 colorful pieces, and is considered appropriate for ages six and up—the same time that most children start reading and basic math. Each of the block's “studs…correspond to numbers and letters in the braille code.” Letters and numbers are also printed in Roman type on the blocks. Additionally, two base plates are included in the box to anchor children's creations, and all of the included pieces can be mixed and matched with other LEGO sets. Learning braille is an important skill, even in an era of evolving text-to-word technology. It can promote independence and better employment opportunities, among other things, according to the European Blind Union (EBU). The LEGO blocks give families and schoolfriends a chance to learn braille alongside blind and visually impaired children. Lisa Taylor, whose seven-year-old daughter Olivia lost her sight as an infant, explained the impact these LEGOs have had on their ability to communicate as a family: “To have a set at home changes everything. We can play with braille together as a family and she can introduce braille to her little sister in a way they both love. LEGO Braille Bricks are accessible for her without being really different from other kids, so she gets to play and learn just like every other child.”

Additionally, time spent reading, spelling, adding, and subtracting is additional practice of these valuable skills. Rasmus Løgstrup, The Lego Group lead designer of braille bricks, described how the company was “inundated with thousands of requests to make [the bricks] more widely available.” He added, “We know this is a strong platform for social inclusion and can’t wait to see families get creative and have fun playing with braille together.”
