Greenland is the largest island in the world. Yet, despite its prominent presence on the world map, most people know very little about its culture and the people who call this remote place home. This inspired a Greenlandic woman named Qupanuk to share and teach the world about life in Greenland through a series of insightful videos. Her channel, Q's Greenland, is a one-stop-shop to know everything about the country, from its traditional food to its unique language.

While many associate Greenland with remoteness and frigid temperatures, Qupanuk—or Q, as she is known—always takes the time to note that “life is amazing” there in her videos. On top of posting every day about what makes Greenland such a unique place, she is the country's first and only mining engineer and mother of four. Originally from Qaqortoq, in Southern Greenland, she currently lives Nuuk, the capital city of Greenland, which has a population of under 20,000.

Her channel's name, Q's Greenland, is a reference to the fact that we're only seeing Greenland through her eyes. Even so, Q's deep understanding of the country and her charming personality make her the perfect teacher of this lesser-known place. She addresses all kinds of topics through her content, ranging from how hot summers get, to how much it costs to go grocery shopping there.

Although Greenland appears very remote, Q also highlights the ways it is connected to the rest of the world.  For example, she addresses what it means for her to hold Danish citizenship–as Greenland is an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. Additionally, she explains what it is like to have a front-row seat to the effects of climate change, as global warming has made the weather of Greenland much more unpredictable.

Whether it is a tour around Nuuk's tallest buildings—which are only 12 stories tall!— or a quick Greenlandic lesson, Q has painted a compelling picture of the most fascinating aspects of her home, becoming almost like an ambassador of the country to the rest of the world. To stay up to date with her videos and learn even more about this interesting country, follow Q's Greenland on Instagram and TikTok.

Everyone deserves healthy meals; however, unfortunately, not everyone has access to fresh ingredients, especially those in underserved communities. A teenager named Lauren Schroeder realized this when she volunteered at a community food nonprofit at age 14. All vegetables and greens that were packed for families in need came in cans and boxes, rather than straight from the fields. Striving to make a change, Lauren set out to grow produce in her Iowa home so she could donate it to low-income families.

“I wanted people to get the nutrition they needed from fresh vegetables,” Lauren, who is now 17, told The Washington Post. This inspired her to start a garden in a half-acre area on her parents’ farm, hoping to grow lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, and zucchini. While her mom was supportive, she made her aware of how much work it would take—still, the teenager was up for the challenge.

To kickstart her project, Lauren got a grant from the National FFA Organization, which promotes agricultural education, to pay for seeds and gardening supplies. Then, the real work began. “I did a lot of research online to find out what worked and what didn’t, what plants needed shade, which ones needed more water and when the best time was to harvest each crop,” she said. Since the summers in Iowa are very hot and dry, she had to water them daily. Lauren added, “Every day, it took about two or three hours before or after softball practice.”

But all her efforts paid off. Her first harvest resulted in 40 pounds of produce that she then donated to eight local charities, including food banks, a soup kitchen, and a nursing home. “It was a really good feeling to know that anyone who wanted fresh vegetables would be able to get them,” Lauren said. “I knew that I wanted to keep going,”

That's why she relaunched her project for 2023, this time taking over a whole acre and expanding her veggie selection to include herbs, pumpkins, cauliflower, and jalapeños, among other greens. So far, she has spent over 1,000 hours working in the garden, which has resulted in 7,000 pounds of vegetables that she has happily donated.

Now that the harvest season has come to a close, the young woman is already making plans for next year. Lauren's new goal is to grown another 13,000 pounds of produce before she goes to college in 2025, bringing her donations up to 20,000 pounds. “I want to impact community members” she told KWQC. “Many people help you out, but it makes more difference when you help other people out. That’s what makes me most happy.”

We've heard about people being rescued by dogs and dolphins, but one lucky scientist was rescued by a hero that was much, much larger. Biologist Nan Hauser was filming off Rarotonga in the Cook Islands when she came across two large sea creatures, one of which was a humpback whale. It turned out that the startling encounter was a blessing in disguise, as the whale whisked Hauser away from the other animal—a massive tiger shark.

Hauser recalled the incredible story during a 2021 interview with BBC Earth. While whales are not known to be aggressive with humans, they are obviously dangerously large and powerful. When Hauser saw the humpback whale charge at her, she didn't know what to expect. Even stranger, the whale apparently tucked her under its pectoral fin, as though shielding the scientist, before transferring her onto its back and carrying her toward the boat.

After Hauser was finally able to find safety and gain distance from the situation, she realized what had occurred. The whale that swept her away was fighting with the other sea creature from earlier, and it was only at that point that Hauser was able to identify the other animal as a large tiger shark. “I've spent my entire life underwater and I've seen plenty of tiger sharks,” she said. “This was like a truck. This was a huge tiger shark and it was coming right for me.”

From that point, Hauser came to the conclusion that the humpback whale was on a mission to protect her. “I still to this day can't believe it happened and being a scientist it's even harder,” she continued. “If someone told me this story, I wouldn't believe them.” Even so, Hauser had all of the evidence in front of her. Then, a second miracle happened. She was reunited with the humpback whale a little over a year later.

Hauser was informed that a whale had moved into the area, and being a whale expert, she went to check it out. At once, Hauser noticed the two notches in the tail fluke. “And then next I knew the whale came up next to the side of the boat,” Hauser said. “He ignored everyone else on the boat and he stared directly at me… I looked at him and I saw a scar on his head and I just screamed, ‘He's back! I can't believe he's back!' And sure enough there he was.”

With no time to waste, Hauser put on her wetskin and jumped into the water so that she could swim beside the giant whale. As they traveled together, the animal stared at her and even nudged her. “It was like seeing a dog that you haven't seen in six months,” Hauser adds. “I miss him. I mean, who misses a whale?” Hopefully, the scientist and her heroic whale have not seen the last of each other.

Biologist Nan Hauser was saved from a tiger shark by a helpful humpback whale. A year later, Hauser was reunited with her hero.

15-Year-Old Amputee Receives First Bionic Arm and Can’t Hide Her Joy

A young amputee patient experienced the excitement of a lifetime after receiving her first bionic arm. A recent video posted by Open Bionics, the makers of the 3D-printed Hero Arm, showed 15-year-old Grace's elated reaction to the technology. She was even able to pick items up with the robotic hand.

With clinics across the U.S., UK, and Europe, Open Bionics “develops medical devices that enhance the human body.” The Hero Arm is designed for amputees with a below-elbow limb difference. It possesses two EMG sensors inside the forearm portion of the prosthesis which lay against the skin of the wearer and detect muscle movement. So, when the user flexes or moves a certain muscle group, the hand of the Hero Arm opens, while a different muscle group will make the hand close. “The easiest comparison: ball your hand into a fist and move your wrist inward,” explains Open Bionics. “Those muscles in your forearm close the bionic hand. Move it outward, and those muscles open the bionic hand!”

In Open Bionics’ video, a professional helps affix the Hero Arm to Grace's forearm. The teenager seems to get the hang of the prosthesis very quickly, and is seen opening and closing the hand, gripping a fork and knife, and lifting up a suitcase. “We’re pretty sure Grace never stopped smiling through her Hero Arm delivery!” Open Bionics writes. “She and her dad Ken traveled from the east coast to our Denver clinic, and Grace returned home with her Hero Arm after mastering control of it almost instantly!”

In addition to helping Grace perform a variety of tasks with the multi-grip functions, the Hero Arm features a 180° wrist rotation, and can lock in a desired position so there's no worry of misusing muscle control. The bionic arm can even change appearance with 50 different magnetic covers. We're sure Grace will continue to have fun with her new prosthesis.

15-year-old Grace received her first bionic arm and mastered its abilities very quickly.

In the 2022 to 2023 school year, 3,362 individual book bans went into effect across 1,557 unique titles. This is an increase over last year's totals, and Florida is leading the book-banning charge. The banned titles include a children's book about Anne Hutchinson, one of the first Rhode Islanders and a female preacher put on trial by puritans, Beloved by Toni Morrison, and The Family Book by Todd Parr. While some bans might seem senseless, others evince a barely disguised desire to target books affirming LGBTQ identities or addressing racism and racist history. Now, the pop star Pink (aka P!nk) is putting her megawatt star power to work to fight such censorship and stand up for the voices behind these books. Pink announced, in collaboration with PEN America, that she would donate 2,000 banned books at her Florida concerts.

Pink played in Miami and Sunrise Florida this past week. Her team planned to distribute titles such as Amanda Gorman‘s The Hill We Climb and Girls Who Code by Reshma Saujani, among other titles. Pink proudly calls herself a longtime reader, denouncing the book bans in an Instagram video: “It's confusing, it's infuriating, it is censorship.” Pink acknowledged to PEN America that being a parent to her two children influences her perspective on the importance of “representation for all races and sexual identities.”

“Books have held a special joy for me from the time I was a child, and that’s why I am unwilling to stand by and watch while books are banned by schools,” Pink said in a statement. “It’s especially hateful to see authorities take aim at books about race and racism and against LGBTQ authors and those of color. We have made so many strides toward equality in this country and no one should want to see this progress reversed. This is why I am supporting PEN America in its work and why I agree with them: no more banned books.” Beyond gifting literature, Pink remains committed to the fight against book bans. Whether you're a kid or an adult, we all make mistakes. Stumbling in front of a massive crowd could be an embarrassing situation for almost anyone. When a young music fan named Willow slipped on stage at a Macklemore concert in Minneapolis, she made sure to jump right back to her feet and continue dancing. Amazed by her courage and determination to keep going, Macklemore delivered a heartfelt speech that sent the entire crowd cheering Willow's name.

A video shared on Instagram shows snippets from the concert. It starts with a clip of Willow preparing to go on stage for 20 seconds of dancing. However, soon after she sets foot, she tries to do a high kick and lands on her back. She doesn't stay down for long though, and Willow continues to do her best for the remaining time while the stadium watches on. Anyone would feel nervous after making a fumble; but afterward, Macklemore made sure to share his thoughts.

“But the thing that I loved the most about this dance-off…is Willow,” he says, looking at Willow and her mom in the front row. “Because you showed us what we all do in life. I've slipped before, my love. I've slipped in front of the entire world before. And you know what you did? You got back up and you kept dancing. So, thank you for reminding us as humans what it looks like when we slip and get back up.” His speech and Willow's bravery clearly resonated with the crowd, as you can hear them chant her name over and over in a beautiful display of support.

Later, when he shared the video with his followers, Macklemore added more thoughts about the concert: “My favorite moment on tour. It hit the most beautiful core of the human experience. Thousands chanting her name, holding her up, letting her know it’s ok, we have all been there. My god. Thank you for reminding us what resilience looks like and for connecting us to our own humanity. We love you Willow. You got tickets to any show for life.” Surely this experience and Macklemore's words will stay with Willow for a long time.

Macklemore learned a valuable life lesson when one of his fans slipped and fell at his concert in Minneapolis.

Ten years ago, San Francisco was transformed into Gotham City and in need of a hero. The Make-A-Wish Foundation helped 5-year-old Miles Scott take on the role of “Batkid,” finally realizing his dream of being a superhero after battling lymphoblastic leukemia since he was 18 months old. In this amazing project, Make-A-Wish and the city of San Francisco created a real-life adventure for Scott to complete, including fighting villains, saving civilians, and earning the key to the city from the mayor himself. While Scott retired his Batkid costume, we are happy to hear that he recently turned 15 and is still in remission.

Living in the Northern Californian town of Tulelake, Scott plays baseball for his high school and enjoys living his cancer-free life. Lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common type of childhood cancer, and while survival rates are much higher today than they were in the past, his parents were understandably scared when Scott received his diagnosis at just over 1 year old. Fortunately, he was able to endure treatment to give himself the best possible chance. And while it is impossible to reclaim those precious years of childhood, Make-A-Wish paid Scott a visit to try and bring some magic back to his life. When he shyly said that his dream was to be Batman, the Foundation stepped up to make it happen.

“It's probably one of our most elaborate wishes,” said Jen Wilson, marketing and promotions manager for Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area, in 2013. “It's very unusual. It's one that's taken several months to plan and countless people to make happen, from volunteers who are stepping up to play the roles of the villains to donations of services of all kinds. We've had an incredible amount of interest in helping with this wish.” Not only did thousands of people go to San Francisco to watch the spectacle, but countless people offered to help out and bring the event to life, including The San Francisco Chronicle publishing a special “Gotham City Chronicle” newspaper for the day. Former President Barack Obama dedicated a video message to Scott, and two years later, a 2015 documentary titled Batman Begins covered the incredible story.

“To this day, Miles’ wish resonates in our collective consciousness as proof of the power of one child’s wish to transform an entire community and bring hope and joy that lasts a lifetime,” says Betsy Biern, CEO of Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area. Scott still has his original Batkid costume—it was even donned by his younger brother for Halloween this year. In the meantime, Scott is looking forward to other adventures in his future. “Right now, he's dead set on going to Alaska and being a ‘pack mule' for his cousin's husband's guide business,” says his mom, Natalie Scott. “And he has a lot of interest in welding. So we'll see!”

We hope to hear more good news from Scott in the near future.

10 years ago, the Make-A-Wish Foundation helped 5-year-old Miles Scott realize his dream of being a superhero.

Scott was diagnosed with leukemia at just 18 months.

Make-A-Wish paid him a visit when he was a toddler, and Scott said his dream was to be Batman.

Years after saving Gotham City, Batkid is now 15 and healthy.

One hundred years ago, on November 10, 1923, a special Akita Inu pup was born. He was adopted by Hidesaburo Ueno, an agricultural professor at Tokyo Imperial University (modern-day University of Tokyo), and called Hachikō. Though it has been almost a century since his passing, the story of Hachikō's unwavering loyalty to his owner continues to inspire dog lovers around the world.

Two years after adopting Hachikō, Ueno passed away unexpectedly from a cerebral hemorrhage at work. The young, white-colored pup was then rehoused several times, ultimately settling in with Ueno's former gardener Kikusaburo Kobayashi. However, Hachikō remained unaware of the fate of his owner. Believing that he would someday return, or perhaps just hopeful that he would, the faithful canine walked to the train station Ueno used to commute to work and waited for his return.

“In the evening, Hachi stood on four legs at the ticket gate and looked at each passenger as if he were looking for someone,” writes Professor Mayumi Itoh. This steadfast loyalty to their human is characteristic of the Akita dog breed, who are known for developing strong bonds with their owner while remaining wary of strangers. Hachikō's determinedness is still astounding though, as he waited through rain or shine, and suffered from abuse from train station employees, children, and other bystanders—all to see his owner again.

Things got a little better for Hachikō after a Tokyo newspaper wrote a piece about him in 1932. This prompted people to send donations to the train station to feed the unwavering pup, and inspired many to make trips to see Hachikō in person. The admiration and love for this dog even led to a fundraising event for a statue of his likeness, which drew a crowd of 3,000 at its unveiling in 1934 (the original statue was later replaced in 1948).

Eventually, nine years and nine months after Uena's death, Hachikō passed away from cancer at the age of 11 in 1935, and was given a memorial service outside of Shibuya Station. “In retrospect, I feel that he knew that Dr. Ueno would not come back, but he kept waiting—Hachikō taught us the value of keeping faith in someone,” wrote Takeshi Okamoto in 1982, who watched Hachikō daily as a high school student.

On what would have been his 100th birthday, Hachikō was honored with a week of celebrations. A video of his life was also shared on YouTube. Many have remarked how incredible it is that Hachikō's loyalty continues to be remembered. Eietsu Sakuraba, author of a book about Hachikō, says: “Even 100 years from now, this unconditional, devoted love will remain unchanged, and the story of Hachikō will live on forever.”

In 1925, a Japanese agricultural professor named Hidesaburo Ueno died unexpectedly at work.

His dog, an akita named Hachikō, spent almost 10 years waiting at the train station for his owner's return. He remained loyal until his death in 1935.

On regular commercial flights, pilots usually greet their passengers from the cockpit. From there, they announce how long the flight will be and the weather conditions at their destination. But recently, one pilot had something even more personal to share. During what looked like an ordinary plane ride, an American Airlines pilot named Jeff Fell addressed his passengers face to face to welcome them to his retirement flight.

In a video that has gone viral on TikTok, Fell can be seen fighting back tears as he gives an emotional message. “Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard. My name is Jeff Fell, I'm the captain on the flight going to Chicago tonight,” he begins, reading his message from a piece of paper. “I normally don't stand up in front of everybody like this, I usually just stay in the cockpit and talk on the PA.” When his voice breaks for the first time, he asks those listening for forgiveness, as this is his final trip as a pilot after a 32-year career with American Airlines.

Standing at the front of the plane, the pilot makes sure that those at the very end can hear him. After all, he happens to have some very special guests there. “I'd like to acknowledge a group of very important people to me,” Fell says. “Most of them are in the back of the airplane and they're the majority of my family who have come along with me on my retirement flight.”

The passengers, moved by his words, clap and cheer for Fell when he takes a moment to breathe and fight back tears. “Thank you all for coming along with me tonight and celebrating this very memorable time in my life. I love all of you,” Fell says, before addressing his wife directly, thanking her for being his rock for almost his entire career. “I love you, and look forward to the next chapter in our lives,” he says, before closing his speech by welcoming everyone on board once more.

Upon the plane's landing, Fell was greeted by a cannon salute at the airport, bookending the pilot's storied career with the top honor there is for these professionals. You can watch these powerful moments in the videos below.

Toddlers are full of endearing reactions. After all, they are discovering the world for the first time, and each of these encounters are full of wonder. Maybe it's the first time they pet a dog or they swam in a pool. However, for a little boy named Logan, the biggest surprise happened during a trip to the optometrist. After suffering from bad sight since an early age, the toddler received his first pair of prescription glasses. When his surroundings and loved ones finally became clear, he flashed the biggest smile.

In a clip that has since gone viral, Logan sits at an eyewear store. Due to his age, he gets a pair of flexible wraparound glasses. His mom puts them on, but they feel a little uncomfortable at the beginning. After trying to push the glasses off, Logan's mom takes his hands to help him notice what has happened. Then, the magic takes place—everything is now bright and sharp, starting with his mom's smiling face.

“You can see now!” Logan's mom says, with a sweet excitement that is just as heartwarming as her son's smile. Logan even bobs his head back with joy as he takes in everything around him. Suddenly, all of the things he's known are brand new again.

With his glasses, Logan will be ready explore and finally see the littlest of details of the big wide world around him.
