15-Year-Old Amputee Receives First Bionic Arm and Can’t Hide Her Joy

A young amputee patient experienced the excitement of a lifetime after receiving her first bionic arm. A recent video posted by Open Bionics, the makers of the 3D-printed Hero Arm, showed 15-year-old Grace's elated reaction to the technology. She was even able to pick items up with the robotic hand.

With clinics across the U.S., UK, and Europe, Open Bionics “develops medical devices that enhance the human body.” The Hero Arm is designed for amputees with a below-elbow limb difference. It possesses two EMG sensors inside the forearm portion of the prosthesis which lay against the skin of the wearer and detect muscle movement. So, when the user flexes or moves a certain muscle group, the hand of the Hero Arm opens, while a different muscle group will make the hand close. “The easiest comparison: ball your hand into a fist and move your wrist inward,” explains Open Bionics. “Those muscles in your forearm close the bionic hand. Move it outward, and those muscles open the bionic hand!”

In Open Bionics’ video, a professional helps affix the Hero Arm to Grace's forearm. The teenager seems to get the hang of the prosthesis very quickly, and is seen opening and closing the hand, gripping a fork and knife, and lifting up a suitcase. “We’re pretty sure Grace never stopped smiling through her Hero Arm delivery!” Open Bionics writes. “She and her dad Ken traveled from the east coast to our Denver clinic, and Grace returned home with her Hero Arm after mastering control of it almost instantly!”

In addition to helping Grace perform a variety of tasks with the multi-grip functions, the Hero Arm features a 180° wrist rotation, and can lock in a desired position so there's no worry of misusing muscle control. The bionic arm can even change appearance with 50 different magnetic covers. We're sure Grace will continue to have fun with her new prosthesis.

15-year-old Grace received her first bionic arm and mastered its abilities very quickly.

Ten years ago, San Francisco was transformed into Gotham City and in need of a hero. The Make-A-Wish Foundation helped 5-year-old Miles Scott take on the role of “Batkid,” finally realizing his dream of being a superhero after battling lymphoblastic leukemia since he was 18 months old. In this amazing project, Make-A-Wish and the city of San Francisco created a real-life adventure for Scott to complete, including fighting villains, saving civilians, and earning the key to the city from the mayor himself. While Scott retired his Batkid costume, we are happy to hear that he recently turned 15 and is still in remission.

Living in the Northern Californian town of Tulelake, Scott plays baseball for his high school and enjoys living his cancer-free life. Lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common type of childhood cancer, and while survival rates are much higher today than they were in the past, his parents were understandably scared when Scott received his diagnosis at just over 1 year old. Fortunately, he was able to endure treatment to give himself the best possible chance. And while it is impossible to reclaim those precious years of childhood, Make-A-Wish paid Scott a visit to try and bring some magic back to his life. When he shyly said that his dream was to be Batman, the Foundation stepped up to make it happen.

“It's probably one of our most elaborate wishes,” said Jen Wilson, marketing and promotions manager for Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area, in 2013. “It's very unusual. It's one that's taken several months to plan and countless people to make happen, from volunteers who are stepping up to play the roles of the villains to donations of services of all kinds. We've had an incredible amount of interest in helping with this wish.” Not only did thousands of people go to San Francisco to watch the spectacle, but countless people offered to help out and bring the event to life, including The San Francisco Chronicle publishing a special “Gotham City Chronicle” newspaper for the day. Former President Barack Obama dedicated a video message to Scott, and two years later, a 2015 documentary titled Batman Begins covered the incredible story.

“To this day, Miles’ wish resonates in our collective consciousness as proof of the power of one child’s wish to transform an entire community and bring hope and joy that lasts a lifetime,” says Betsy Biern, CEO of Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area. Scott still has his original Batkid costume—it was even donned by his younger brother for Halloween this year. In the meantime, Scott is looking forward to other adventures in his future. “Right now, he's dead set on going to Alaska and being a ‘pack mule' for his cousin's husband's guide business,” says his mom, Natalie Scott. “And he has a lot of interest in welding. So we'll see!”

We hope to hear more good news from Scott in the near future.

10 years ago, the Make-A-Wish Foundation helped 5-year-old Miles Scott realize his dream of being a superhero.

Scott was diagnosed with leukemia at just 18 months.

Make-A-Wish paid him a visit when he was a toddler, and Scott said his dream was to be Batman.

Years after saving Gotham City, Batkid is now 15 and healthy.

At graduation ceremonies, it's common to see parents proudly cheering and clapping for their kids, whether they are finishing elementary school or picking up their masters degree. But have you ever seen it happen the other way around? A heartwarming viral video shows a little girl named Shivaee Nalawade loudly rooting for her dad during his graduation ceremony. In that moment, she not only have him a core memory but also melted the hearts of everyone in the room.

The clip shows Shivaee's dad, Aashish, walking up to the stage to pick up his master’s degree diploma from Teesside University in England. As the then 34-year-old approaches the podium, Shivaee yells, “Congratulations, Daddy!” sparking laughter and endearment from those in the room.

The dad, touched by the gesture, replies, “I love you,” and blows her a kiss. Thrilled to be sharing a moment with her dad, she loudly replies, “I love you, daddy!” His smile grows even wider, and he looks deeply moved when his name is announced and he joins the rest of the graduates on the stage.

“My graduation ceremony wouldn't have got any better without my little princess,” he wrote on Instagram. “As her words echoed through the silent ceremony hall, my heart melted along with all the others present. Rather than the graduation award, I felt ‘Being father to my daughter' is the biggest accomplishment and achievement to me.”

Since Shivaee was born in 2019, she would have been barely 3 years old when the video was taken in June 2022. The fact that she was only a toddler makes the scene even more sweet, and it’s something that her dad will never forget. He added, “This was the cutest moment during my whole graduation ceremony that would stay alive in my heart forever.”

Throughout the years, we've seen people with unique pets, such as axolotls and spiders. But have you ever met a pet water buffalo? A girl named Chen Dongmei, from Sichuan, China, is the proud human of one of these fluffy creatures. From roaming the woods together to posing for selfies, Chen shares her adorable adventures alongside her water buffalo on Instagram.

Chen's water buffalo is named Niuzai (牛仔), which means “cowboy” in Chinese. The sweet animal is 2 years old, and always seems camera-ready. In many of her videos, Chen stands in an open field and calls out to Niuzai. The water buffalo then cheerfully runs to Chen's side, careful not to hurt her with his horns. In many of the clips, the Niuzai lovingly rubs his head against the girl as a way to demonstrate affection and excitement to see her.

For Chen, who seems to live in a rural area, Niuzai is also a trusty coworker. They sometimes do field work together, but there is always time for naps. As a testament to the water buffalo being like all pets big and small, Chen has captured him walking in on her while she is having a snack, hoping that his loving human will share a bite.

Chen and Niuzai's adventures are so endearing that they have sparked many people's imaginations. Some have compared their bond to that of a Disney princess and her animal sidekick, while others would love to see their bond explored in a whimsical Studio Ghibli-like film.

To stay up to date with Chen and Niuzai, you can follow then on Instagram.

Children sometimes have the most heartwarming displays of friendship. At this age, there is no need to play it cool or tone down their excitement, resulting in truly endearing scenes when they hang out with their buds. For a boy named Brayden, finally getting to meet his online bestie filled him with unfiltered joy, and it was all captured in a sweet video that has now gone viral.

During the pandemic, like many boys his age, Brayden found solace in playing video games online. There, he met Sebastian, who he came across while playing Fortnite and Roblox. With time, their friendship grew beyond online gaming platforms, and they boys FaceTimed each other for three years.

With pandemic measures finally relaxing, the boys' parents set up a plan for them to meet in real life somewhere in the Mississippi Gulf Coast without them knowing. As the clip shows, they were both driven to the meeting point by their moms, who knew their reactions to finally being together would be worth sharing.

The viral clip was taken by Brayden's mom. In the video, the boy suspects she is up to something, as he asks his mother, “Why you get the camera? Huh? Why you got the camera?” As they keep walking, Brayden's mom can be heard saying, “Hey Sebastian!” It's then that Brayden realizes who is standing in front of him—his best friend! First, his jaw drops and he lets out a squeal of joy. Without hesitation, he runs to hug Sebastian, who remains shocked, but smiling.

The happiness Brayden displays in a matter of seconds is definitely contagious. He smiles as if he's been given the biggest gift on the planet—and maybe he has. It's gestures like this that remind us that friendship is truly precious, and that nothing beats the joy of time well spent with those we love.

A boy named Brayden finally got to meet his online bestie after three years online gaming together, and his reaction is the sweetest thing you'll see today.

For some people, nothing beats the feeling of making their parents proud. For immunologist Drew Weissman, calling his mom and dad when he has achieved something is a must, even when he’s 64 years old. The physician just won the Nobel Prize in Medicine alongside Katalin Karikó for their work towards the development of a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, which has saved millions of lives around the world. And now, a heartwarming video of him ringing his parents to tell them the news has been posted online.

In the clip, Weissman is accompanied by his wife, Mary Ellen, as he calls his parents, who are in their 80s. “Hi, it's your son,” he says with a tingle of nervousness in his voice. “No kidding,” jokes his mom, unaware of what's coming next. After making sure his dad is also around to listen, he announces that he has some news to share with them. “I won the Nobel Prize,” he announces, to which his parents reply with squeals of excitement before congratulating him. “Oh my god! I don't know what to say. I'm ready to fall on the floor,” his mom says.

Weissman and Karikó first published their findings on mRNA in 2005, although their research got little attention at the time. Likely aware of her son's path to the Nobel Prize, his mom reminisces about her son's wishes to win the award. “You kept saying, ‘Oh, no, it's never going to happen,' and you did it! And so young!” she proudly states, despite Weissman being in his 60s. His dad then commends him with a short but sweet statement. “You're the product of our hearts, Drew,” he says. His mom later wraps up the call by saying, “Congratulations, and you deserve it.”

Weiss keeps a soft smile throughout the call and is visibly happy to have informed his parents. This is far from the first time Weissman made calling them a priority. Back in November 2020, when it was announced that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine that featured his findings was highly effective, he also rang them up immediately to let them know.

Ultimately, Weissman's bond to his parents is a testament to how time can pass, and children can grow, yet many parents will always be thrilled to hear about our achievements, whether big or small. After all, your parents will always be your parents, no matter your age. Who wouldn't get a kick out of making them feel proud?

A heartwarming video shows 64-year-old immunologist Drew Weissman calling his parents to let them know he has won the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

In May, the whole world watched as the Writers Guild of America went on strike. While there were many reasons that triggered this walkout, one of the major issues was residuals for shows on streaming services, which pay writers a much smaller amount than television networks. After months of bringing Hollywood to a virtual standstill, it seems like the protests have finally secured a tentative agreement with major studios.

This announcement comes after 146 days of striking. If the agreement goes through, it will not only help current writers in Hollywood, but future workers as well. “We can say, with great pride, that this deal is exceptional—with meaningful gains and protections for writers in every sector of the membership,” the WGA's negotiating committee writes. For now, the details are unavailable as it is still in the finalizing process. “What we have won in this contract—most particularly, everything we have gained since May 2nd—is due to the willingness of this membership to exercise its power, to demonstrate its solidarity, to walk side-by-side, to endure the pain and uncertainty of the past 146 days,” the committee adds.

SAG-AFTRA also offered its congratulations to the WGA for reaching a potential agreement with the Association of Motion Pictures and Television Producers (AMPTP). “SAG-AFTRA congratulates the WGA on reaching a tentative agreement with the AMPTP after 146 days of incredible strength, resiliency, and solidarity on the picket lines,” SAG-AFTRA says in a statement. “Since the day the WGA strike began, SAG-AFTRA members have stood alongside the writers on the picket lines. We remain on strike in our TV/Theatrical contract and continue to urge the studio and streamer CEOs and the AMPTP to return to the table and make the fair deal that our members deserve and demand.” SAG-AFTRA's strike has been going on since July 14.

Members of both unions hope this agreement will pave the way for more job security for people in the WGA and SAG-AFTRA. “This was for the folks who are coming up behind me—that they have the opportunity to make a living,” Sal Calleros, writer and WGA strike captain, says. “So if we reached a good agreement on those big areas concerning residuals, AI, the number of writers in the room… Then the folks behind us will then have a shot to make this an actual career.”

While the fight for adequate pay and job security is not over yet, this development offers much-needed hope for writers, actors, and other workers in the industry.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has tentatively reached an agreement with studios.

The King's Guard is known for being stoic and unflappable. Even with thousands of tourists stopping by Buckingham Palace to take photos beside them, they are rarely seen breaking character. However, one little boy dressed as a soldier received rare acknowledgment from the guards when he saluted the unit during their march.

A TikTok video by @frankthesoldier1 captures the entire event. The young child is wearing a perfect replica of the King's Guard uniform with a bright red jacket, white belt, and furry black hat. He waits for the unit to move forward and just as they pass, the little boy raises his left hand in a salute. Rather than be ignored, a couple of the guards are seen giving the child subtle acknowledgment. One man carrying a trombone appears to smile his way, and later, one of the last men marching gives the boy a couple of curt nods as if he is also part of the unit.

After the King's Guard leaves the area, the kid turns to his parent and gives an enthusiastic thumb's up. Like many, he probably didn't expect for the guards to act like they saw him, so the fact that he received slight recognition was likely an exciting surprise. Though rare, this is not the only instance where soldiers stepped up for visitors.

Another video on TikTok captures a soldier in the midst of performing King's Life Guard duties at Horse Guards when an older man and a 17-year-old boy with Down's syndrome approach to take a photo. The soldier sees them trying to get closer and promptly takes a smooth side-step toward them. His actions are greatly appreciated by the pair, and the older man tells him: “Much respect.”

A young boy dressed in a soldier costume had a rare interaction with the King's Guard. As they passed, he received subtle acknowledgment from a couple of the soldiers.

What would you do with $10,000 if someone gave it to you out of the blue? The rules are simple, you must spend it in three months, not save or invest. What would you buy? Where would you go? And who would you help? While this experiment might sound like a dream, it was a reality for 200 people in a study conducted by researchers from the University of British Columbia, Yale University, and Technology, Entertainment, Design (TED). The study's results were announced in Psychological Science. As it would turn out, people are surprisingly generous with their sudden windfalls of cash.

You might be wondering where all this money came from in the first place. The experiment was funded by wealthy donors who were interested in supporting this inquiry into mankind's goodness. Participants were then found through TED's social media, although they did not know what sort of experiment they were signing up for. Two hundred people were chosen from around the globe, structured to include a mix of generally wealthy countries and less wealthy countries. The nations included Brazil, Indonesia, Kenya, Australia, Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Each individual was given $10,000 to spend within three months. They could not save or invest it, but otherwise the sky was the limit. They also had to keep records of their spending.

Some of the participants were obliged by the study organizers to document their spending on social media, adding an element of social pressure and applause. Across the participants, the additional money increased incomes by 10% for some and up to 125% for others. Yet the team found that people are generous across the board, no matter how impactful the cash. Of the non-posting group, 15% of the their income was donated to charity, while the posters (perhaps swayed by kudos or pressure) donated 23%. Across the board, 68% of the money was spent on what the researchers termed prosocial spending. This spending benefited others beyond the spender—for example, taking a friend to dinner. People got creative. One woman gave away all of the money in $500 segments towards community causes. Others donated to loved ones in need.

So humans are not as selfish as some might think. Similarly, their spending habits sometimes defy cynical prediction—for example, people experiencing homelessness who received money in another study spent it on true needs, not unkind stereotypes. This knowledge can inform social policy, and it can also give a sense of hope. Additionally, donating to others has a selfish perk—it makes you happier.

What happens when you give someone $10,000 and tell them to spend it in three months? A study found a lot of prosocial spending.

What would make your dog's day? While some canines are more food-motivated and would love a special treat, others love their toys above all else. Dog owners and couple Emily Crisp and Ben Mesches thought of the best way to surprise their golden retriever Jolene: dressing up as the lovable pooch's favorite toy and becoming a life-size version for her to play with.

The short minute-long video of the big reveal is an instant serotonin boost. At the start, the camera shows the beautiful golden actively playing with a small stuffed toy of the character Gumby. Jolene pauses what she's doing when a new figure enters the room. Wearing a life-size Gumby costume, Mesches approaches Jolene, making him unrecognizable to the dog at first. Jolene stares at Mesches, transfixed, and slowly nears the massive moving toy. Then, recognizing the giant green figure (or perhaps smelling her owner's scent) she becomes even more excited and jumps on Mesches over and over.

“Jolene, he's real! You have a real-life Gumby,” says Crisp, laughing at Jolene's enthusiastic reaction. Mesches eventually ends up on the floor and Jolene continues covering him with affectionate kisses and licks. The combination of seeing her favorite toy in action while suspecting it's her owner underneath is clearly an overload of pleasant surprises for the sweet dog. It's no wonder that this video has 54 million views. After watching it once, you'll want to see Jolene's mesmerized reaction to a dream come true over and over again.

Meet Jolene, a beautiful golden retriever who absolutely loves her Gumby toy.

Jolene's humans, Emily Crisp and Ben Mesches, decided to surprise the lovable pooch with a giant version of her beloved toy by dressing up as Gumby for her.

Watch how the adorable dog reacted to Mesches dressed in costume as a life-size Gumby:

Gumby even took Jolene on a lovely walk.

What a happy girl!

Since the whole incident went viral, Jolene has been blessed with many more Gumby toys.
